Every year the Open Infrastructure Foundation calls to the community of OpenStack users - stand up and be counted! The annual user survey provides valuable insights into the health of the project and the evolving usage of OpenStack in current times.
The OpenStack user survey is open for contributions until August 28th.
What is Used?
The survey asks some high-level questions about user deployments of OpenStack:
- The scale of user deployments in terms such as CPU core count and storage capacity.
- The method of user deployments: how is OpenStack being deployed and managed? Previous surveys have shown projects such as Kolla-Ansible, used by StackHPC's preferred infrastrucure-as-code solution Kayobe, are widely used in the OpenStack user community.
- The services used in user deployments: everyone uses Nova compute services, but how many people are using secondary services such as Magnum for Kubernetes, or Manila for fileshares on demand?
What is Missing?
The survey also enables the technical teams working on OpenStack development with the opportunity to interact with the user base and ask about functional gaps and pain points in the OpenStack code. This opportunity to solicit and provide feedback is very important: without it, the astonishing diversity of OpenStack usage makes it very hard for developers to understand what is most important for the project's users.
What Happens to the Data?
Apart from providing important feedback to the developer community, the survey data is also collated into an annual user survey report which is published after the survey data collection is completed. Detailed analysis of the feedback is published (here's feedback given in 2023). The 2022 User Survey Report includes a lot of interesting data. Did you know how many OpenStack clouds have over a million CPU cores? (7, according to 2022 survey responses!)
